The Association of Greek Art Historians organized the colloquium Approaches to the opus by Johann Joachim Winckelmann at the De Chirico Amphitheater at the Athens School of Fine Arts, 256 Pireos Street, Athens, Greece.

The colloquium marked the 300 years of J. J. Winckelmann’s birth.

The topics included:

  • The ideological and aesthetic foundations of Winckelmann’s views on the art of antiquity
  • Readings of Winckelmann’s opus
  • Winckelmann’s contribution to the fields of archaeology and history of art

Speakers included Nikos Daskalothanassis (professor of art history, Athens School of Fine Arts); Dimitris Plantzos (associate professor of classical archaeology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens); Aris Sarafianos (assistant professor of art history, University of Ioannina).
